Dear Sir,
Tt seems a great pity and also somewhat
of a defeatist attitude to take but I
have to admit it - St. Albert seems to
be gradually "going to the dogs".
Each month sees the arrival of new fami-
lies and their pets. Some, I must admit
(and I speak only of those in my own
area), but very fex, do try to keep
their dogs in. Others seem to have that
"couldn't care less" attitude about the
whole thing, and let "Fido" wander where
ever its fancy takes it - usually on
someone else's lawn or flower beds. Lote
of hard work, time, and money go into
making one's property look anything like
decent - especially in a new development
and I an cure most people would far rath
er pay the Town of St. Albert for their
water supply each month, rather than en-
listing the help of the dogs to water
‘their lawns for then.
T have heard it eaid "Why should I both-
er to keep my dog in? Such and such a
body lets hers out all the tine?” why
indeed!
Then, we come to the matter of the S.P.
C.A. who act as our "pound". They get
a monthly salery - @ very reasonable one
‘too - to patrol the are: Are they got
ng to try extra hard to fill up their
truck when they get paid anyway? Also,
they don't have to live with the roamers
all day. I am certain that if the job
were given over to a couple of house
wives or house-owmers, the truck wouldnt
be large enough to hold the dogs. Now,
I am not putting the blame on the Pound.
After all, if someone sees the truck
through the window and phones so-and-so
who, in turn, will phone somebody else
to the effect that the pound is coming
end to get their dog in quick, then what
good can the Pound do? I am pretty cer-
tain too that if we had some kind of
cengus on their owners, most of these
dog-roamers will be the ones who do not
have a license, Another bit of proof
that remulations don't worry them.
I am sure that some reader will automet-
feally be saying "Oh, oh, another crank
writing about the dog situation again.
Why does she bother? It's all been said
before and no good cane of it". They
are right. But at least it makes me
feel a little better for putting it inte
words. I know that my letter will serve
no useful purpose, other than allowing
me to let off steam. I am not sure just
whet else it could do.
One last thought - about the swimming
pool we are all so excited about. How
guch is it going to cost the taxpayers
to hire a full-time attendant to keep
out the dogs!!
Please don't print my name.
that I sm a coward.
It's not
It's just that I
don't relish the thought of any irate
dog-roaner owner setting "Fido" on me!
Yours sincerely,
Dog Owner (Licensed and Fenced In)

Dear Sir,
I would like to take this opportunity to
express ay complete disgust with the av-
rage parent in this community. It is
ay opinion from past experience that
parents do not care what their children
do for recreation, or who coaches them.
What must an organization do in this
town to recruit help which in turn is
only trying to help their children.
T personally am connected with the hock~
ey program, and out of approximately 200)
boys we have 15 men concerned enough to
get out of their big fat chairs to make
better citizens of YOUR chidren.
These are my own personal opinions.
B. Welsh.
(Bditors Note: Interest of parents in
the recreational activities of their
children is in many cases disappointing.
We suggest to Mr. delsh that he contact
the parents personally, not by phone,
and explain to them the difficulties of
the organization. le believe that in
many cases he will be surprised with the|
results. Personal contact with parents
4s a gust to guarantee a good operation,
although we realize that it will take a
lot of time and patience to do so.)
Dear Sir,
It would appear to me that Mayor Veness
is being rather facetious when he says,
“the only proper course of action for
me at this tine is to continue in office
and let a court of law rule upon ay elig|
ibility”.
There is nothing else he can do at this
time but to remain in office until a
court of law decides upon his eligibil-
ity, and this is exactly why we, as cit-
izens of St. Albert, have obtained legal
council and fully intend to proceed with
our action to have a decision made.

As for the mayor's statement, “if it is
in the public interest to bring this
matter to court", I can only say that
when the time comes that the citizens of
our town, or any town for that matter,
cease to take any “public interest” in
the qualifications of their town offic-
{als then it is in a sad state indeed.
In the past two years we have had nothire|
but dissention and adverse publicity in
the ranks of Town Hall, an¢ now the
latest failure of the administration is
that of the Town's senior administrator
and the town engineer resigning their
Positions, and thismly two weeks after
‘an el-ction when one would expect a
gathering of forces to work in a closer
harmony.
I would most certainly think that in the
"public interest” of the town that the
time is long overdue for more direct
leadership in the position of mayor.

At a recent meeting of the 25 man manag
ement committre which has been set up
to guide the local curling club for the
coming season, Armand Donais was electe,
Presidetn, backed up by a strong exec-
utive of Norm Murray, Vice President;
Richard Bird, Secretary; Del Larsen,
Treasurer; with Bob Hudson, Kurt Schin-
icinger and Barbara Arnold as advisory
executive members. The entire manage-
ment committee has been split up into
sub-committees, where everyone is en-
thusiastically formulating plans to
keep the curlers and the curling rink
buzzing with activity this coming winter
Among the various projects slated, is a
weekly 16's Cash Bonapiel alternating
one week for men and one week for mixed
curlers, as well as the Annual Club
Spiel during the week of December 15.
Many other social evenings are also on
the agenda as well as plans for fund
raising drives of one type or another,
with the immediate aim of helping the
rink back on its feet.
On Saturday, October 24th, curling at
the rink officially got underway when
the mixed league, with an overflow men-
bership of 96 members, started right in
where they left off last spring, on ice,
which thanks to the ice maker, Mr. We.
Bird, gives every indication of again
being the keenest and finest in the
district. This Monday saw the Men's
Square Draw with 144 members off to a
flying start, with the ladies - over
90 atrong taking to the ice on Tuesday.
Tt would appear that this will be a
banner year for St. Albert curlers, with
the enthusiasism being generated, reaul-
ting in a revitalized bealthy club
which will be a community asset for man
years to come.
(2Aitor's Note: Although only a begin-
ner, we must agree that the ice on
Which we played last Priday was tops.
It was a real pleasure for all the curl
ers to play their favourite winter
sport.
